In 1948 George Orwell released the book Nineteen Eighty-Four. In it he described an oppressive world where the government watched everything you did, listened to every conversation, and made sure you thought politically correct thoughts. The story warned how the tools of technology, war and fear could be used against people to create an ultimate oppressive state where real questions of trust, friendship, and patriotism were reviled as treason istelf. When it arrived- 1984 -the world breathed a sigh of relief thinking we had avoided the totalitarian state Mr. Orwell had warned us about. We didn't have cameras in every house, bugs in every lamp, speech codes or thought police. We went on our way thinking that here, in America, such things would never come to pass . We would not have to fear our associations, what we said, what we did, what we read...
...But a funny thing happened in the last 20 years...
We changed the patent laws...we tweaked the copyright laws...we "improved" the Cyber laws...we redefined federal criminal codes...and we suffered brutal attacks by terrorists bent on causing our country suffering. 20 years of 'Politics as Usual' has introduced us to the worst enemy America has ever had to face....
